{"id":9890,"date":"2019-12-19T16:20:18","date_gmt":"2019-12-20T00:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=9890"},"modified":"2019-12-19T16:26:10","modified_gmt":"2019-12-20T00:26:10","slug":"december-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=9890","title":{"rendered":"December 19"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2019 December 19<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Jeremy Tatum writes:&nbsp;&nbsp; Jochen M\u00f6hr sends from Metchosin a photograph of a  <strong>winter moth <\/strong><strong><em>Operophtera <\/em><\/strong><strong>sp., <\/strong>  which closely resembles the one shown on December 18.&nbsp; We repeat here the December 18 moth, and show, below it, today&#8217;s moth.&nbsp; Although they look very similar, I believe the first of these is the native  <strong><em>O. occidentalis<\/em><\/strong>, and the second is the European <strong>  <em>O. brumata<\/em><\/strong>.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"null\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" originalwidth=\"624\" originalheight=\"563\" width=\"576\" height=\"519.6923076923077\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pastedImage-54.png\"><br \/>  <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Operophtera occidentalis <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae)&nbsp;&nbsp; Jochen M\u00f6hr<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; There is a broad dark streak going from about the centre of the forewing to the mid-point of the outer margin.&nbsp; It is not very obvious in the above specimen, though it becomes clearer when viewed from a distance.&nbsp; I could be wrong (it happens!), but I   believe this indicates <em>occidentali<\/em>s.&nbsp; Also, I think the little black dot within the pale medial band, near the costal margin, is also an indicator of  <em>occidentalis.<br \/>  <\/em><\/p>\n<p>  <\/p>\n<p>  <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"null\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" originalwidth=\"624\" originalheight=\"507\" width=\"576\" height=\"468\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pastedImage-55.png\"><br \/>  <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Operophtera brumata <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae)&nbsp; Jochen M\u00f6hr<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The dark streak and the little dark dot are absent in the specimen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; And now, just as I type this, another dozen have come in from Jochen.&nbsp; I think there are some of each,&nbsp; which I&#8217;ll label with my best opinion, and a few,&nbsp; labelled &#8220;sp.&#8221; that I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ll commit myself to!&nbsp; I wonder if there is any hybridization.&nbsp;   Any comments from viewers are more than welcome.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"null\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" originalwidth=\"624\" originalheight=\"458\" width=\"576\" height=\"422.7692307692308\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pastedImage-56.png\"><br \/>  <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Operophtera <\/em>sp. (Lep.: Geometridae)&nbsp; Jochen M\u00f6hr<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; Since we can&#8217;t be exactly sure of this moth, I thought I&#8217;d see if we could get an identification on the spider!&nbsp; Well, of course, the spider cannot be identified with certainty from this photograph, but Dr Robb Bennett has given it his best go.&nbsp; He suggests   that it is an immature theridiid.
