{"id":9839,"date":"2019-12-06T16:06:16","date_gmt":"2019-12-07T00:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=9839"},"modified":"2019-12-06T16:06:32","modified_gmt":"2019-12-07T00:06:32","slug":"december-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=9839","title":{"rendered":"December 6"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2019 December 6<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Jochen M\u00f6hr writes from Metchosin:&nbsp; During my &#8211; unsuccessful &#8211; search for female  <em>Operophtera<\/em>, I found a dead fly, which looked strange to me.&nbsp; After taking pictures, I have the suspicion that it is a fairly ordinary fly and that the grey rings might be some fungal growth.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; Jeremy Tatum writes:&nbsp; Jochen is right on both counts &#8211; the fly is &#8220;ordinary&#8221; and the growth is a fungus.&nbsp; I cannot be totally certain of the fly, but I believe it is most likely the  <strong>Common House Fly <\/strong><strong><em>Musca domestica<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;  <\/strong>This fly isn&#8217;t actually all that &#8220;ordinary&#8221; &#8211; many of the flies that come into my apartment are usually  <em>Fannia, <\/em>or <em>Calliphora<\/em>, or <em>Pollenia<\/em> &#8211; I don&#8217;t often see genuine  <em>Musca<\/em>.&nbsp; Also some tachinids look quite like this fly, and with quite similar wing venation.&nbsp; However,  <em>Musca domestica <\/em>at present looks like the best fit. We are grateful to Bill Savale for confirming that the growth is indeed a fungus, which probably infected the fly while it was still alive, and subsequently killed it.&nbsp; Bill tells us that the fungus   is a phycomycete, <em>Entomophthora muscae<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"width: 624px;
