\u00a0\u00a0 Mr E found this tiny fungus-eating ladybird beetle in Thetis Lake Park on October 22.\u00a0 The choice is between the rather similar Psyllobora vigintimaculata <\/em>and P. borealis.<\/em>\u00a0 <\/em>Charlene Wood<\/strong> writes:<\/p>\n

That is tricky! I often leave them as Psyllobora <\/em>sp., but if I must, I’d be happy to call this\u00a0Psyllobora vigintimaculata<\/em><\/strong> based on the small gap between the lateral and apical spots on the elytra.<\/p>\n

The main difference as I understand from Gordon (1985):<\/p>\n

Elytron with strongly developed lateral spot behind middle, spot either free or narrowly connected the large inner spot, widely separated from apical spots (Fig. 693 f) ….. borealis<\/em><\/strong> Casey<\/p>\n

– Elytron with lateral spot behind middle usually not strongly developed, narrowly separated from apical spot or spots, or joined to it (Figs. 691 f) \u00a0….. vigintimaculata <\/em><\/strong>(Say)<\/p>\n

Jeremy Tatum continues:\u00a0\u00a0 Unfortunately\u00a0 my computer is refusing to reproduce Gordon\u2019s drawings, but, yes, Mr E\u2019s beetle does indeed look like Psyllobora vigintimaculata<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 The \u201capical spot\u201d is the one near the very tip of the elytron.\u00a0 In Mr E\u2019s beetle, it is barely separated by a tiny white isthmus from the main big blotch. In boreale<\/em> that apical spot is lonely, quite separated by a mile from the big main blotch.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Libby follows this up with:\u00a0\u00a0 Just remembered that Rick photographed a caterpillar on the juniper about 6 weeks ago (Sept 8th). I didn’t try to ID it at the time, but have just taken another look at his photos and am pretty sure that’s what it has to be. Good match for photo on MPG.\u00a0 [Jeremy Tatum writes: Yes definitely a good match.\u00a0 I\u2019d say no doubt at all.\u00a0 We can tell from the swollen thoracic segments that it is shortly going to pupate.]<\/p>\n
