It was seen at the south end of Island View Beach.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Well, replies Jeremy Tatum, I hope Kirsten means that she \u201csaw\u201d a caterpillar rather than that she \u201cwas\u201d one.\u00a0 In any case, what a spectacular caterpillar it is!\u00a0 It is indeed the same species as the one she showed on August 26, from nearby McIntyre Reservoir \u2013 a <strong>Bedstraw Hawk Moth.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am beginning to lose count, but I think this is the sixth report of this species to Invert Alert this year \u2013 four adults, and two caterpillars, the latter both found by Kirsten.\u00a0 Today\u2019s caterpillar is a very different colour variety from the one Kirsten photographed on August 26 , so she did well to recognize that today\u2019s is the same species.\u00a0 Here they are both, first, the one Kirsten found in August:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 624px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/pastedImage-83.png\" width=\"597.6\" height=\"357.21923076923076\" name=\"null\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Bedstraw Hawk Moth <em>Hyles gallii <\/em>(Lep.: Sphingidae) Kirsten Mills<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>and now the one she found on September 16:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 596px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image004.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/pastedImage-84.png\" name=\"null\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Bedstraw Hawk Moth <em>Hyles gallii <\/em>(Lep.: Sphingidae) Kirsten Mills<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 Although these individuals look very different, both have a red \u201chorn\u201d \u2013 I believe this is constant in all colour varieties of the caterpillar.\u00a0 So far this year, we have received one photograph of an adult <em>Hyles lineata, <\/em>but we haven\u2019t yet had one of a caterpillar.
