\u00a0\u00a0 Cheryl Hoyle sends some photographs from View Royal.\u00a0 The first one was photographed on August 12; the others on August 27.<\/p>\n

Dr Rob Cannings identifies the fly as a robber fly<\/strong>, Neomochtherus willistoni<\/em><\/strong> — common around here in late summer.\u00a0 He writes:\u00a0 Note the rather long, triangular ovipositor, longer than in Machimus,<\/em> a genus of similar looking robber flies.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum writes: My guess at the dragonfly below was Aeshna palmata<\/em>, but Dr Cannings was kind enough to put me at my ease by saying that females of this species and Rhionaeschna multicolor<\/em><\/strong> can be hard to tell apart from photographs.\u00a0 He points to the pale areas beside the base of the T-spot on the top of the face, which make it more likely that the photograph is of the latter species.<\/p>\n

Blue-eyed Darner Rhionaeschna multicolor <\/em>(Odo.: Aeshnidae)\u00a0 Cheryl Hoyle<\/p>\n

\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Cabbage Whites <\/strong>and Woodland Skippers <\/strong>are still common, but other butterflies are becoming scarce. Gordon Hart saw a Pine White <\/strong>at Pedder Bay on August 26, and a Lorquin\u2019s Admiral <\/strong>at his Highlands property today.<\/p>\n
