The Herald Moth <\/strong>is supposed to have a strong proboscis, which can pierce the skins of ripening fruits.\u00a0 This one, photographed by Gordon Hart yesterday in his Highlands yard, is demonstrating its skills on a yellow plum.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Mike Yip writes from Nanoose:\u00a0 I encountered some extra-curricular activity in my yard this morning with the Common Woodnymphs<\/strong>. They have been flying locally for about three weeks and are easy to find in the Garry Oak meadows around Nanoose Bay. Mylitta Crescents<\/strong> are also in flight again. The Dun Skipper<\/strong> was seen on the logging road near Rhodo Lake two weeks ago, as was the Branded Skipper<\/strong> (Common or Western?) at Whiskey Creek. The moth was photographed at Long Beach and was determined by Libby Avis as Euxoa <\/em>sp.\u00a0 <\/strong>(Possibly E. olivia<\/em>?)<\/p>\n

Note the slight concavity of the forewing outer margin, characteristic of the species.<\/p>\n

The white spots indicate that this is a female.<\/p>\n

Branded Skipper Hesperia comma <\/em>(Lep.: Hesperiidae)\u00a0 Mike Yip<\/p>\n

Some \u201csplitters\u201d will divide this skipper into Common Branded Skipper H. comma<\/em>, and Western Branded Skipper H. colorado.<\/em>\u00a0 <\/em>On this site I treat them as a single species, H. comma.<\/em>\u00a0 <\/em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n
