\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>It didn\u2019t take long for some of yesterday\u2019s unidentified insects to get identified, thanks to Libby Avis, Scott Gilmore, Gordon Hart, and Cheryl Hoyle on one of her own photographs.\u00a0\u00a0 Here is what we have so far:<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 This one is Coccinella septempunctata<\/em><\/strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I should have got that one myself, but one of its septem puncta is very small and misled me!<\/p>\n

Coccinella septempunctata <\/em>(Col.: Coccinellidae)\u00a0 Cheryl Hoyle<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0This one is the bug Eurygaster amerinda<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 There is just one small point nagging at me.\u00a0 E. amerinda <\/em>is a<\/p>\n

North American species, so that\u2019s probably what it is.\u00a0 There is, however, a very similar European<\/p>\n

species, E. testudinaria<\/em>, and, to my entirely untutored eye,Cheryl\u2019s photograph looks slightly more like<\/p>\n

the European insect than the native North American one.\u00a0 We do, of course, have lots of<\/p>\n

European insects and other organisms here, though I don\u2019t know if there are North American records of<\/p>\n

testudinaria<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 Cheryl sends a second photograph of it, not quite as sharp as yesterday\u2019s, but it does<\/p>\n

show a more dorsal view:<\/p>\n

Eurygaster amerinda <\/em>(Hem.: Scutelleridae)\u00a0 Cheryl Hoyle<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 The greenbottle <\/strong>is probably Lucilia sericata<\/em><\/strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lucilia sericata <\/em>(Dip.: Calliphoridae)\u00a0 Cheryl Hoyle<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Libby, Scott and Gordon all came up with Rhagonycha fulva<\/em><\/strong> for the soldier beetle, and, for good<\/p>\n

\u00a0measure, Cheryl came up with a second photograph of two of them in copula<\/em>:<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 I didn\u2019t think anyone would be able to identify the very small beetle that Cheryl photographed<\/p>\n

\u00a0yesterday, but I had greatly underestimated local expertise. \u00a0\u00a0Libby, Scott and Cheryl herself all put it in<\/p>\n

the buprestid genus Agrilus<\/em><\/strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I had no idea that any buprestids were that small.\u00a0 Apparently the genus<\/p>\n

Agrestis <\/em>has the reputation of being the genus with the largest number (c<\/em>3000) of species in the animal<\/p>\n

kingdom, just as Coleoptera is the largest Order (\u201cGod is someone with an inordinate fondness for<\/p>\n

beetles\u201d \u2013 JBS Haldane)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n
