\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>We open this morning with a miscellany of so far unidentified insects.\u00a0 If any viewer can help with these please let us know. At this time of year, many of the experts are away on holiday.\u00a0 If we make any progress with the identifications, we shall post what we find.<\/p>\n

We believe this is a fly of the Family Limoniidae (which some authors treat as a Subfamily Limoniinae of the crane flies Tipulidae).<\/p>\n

Presumably a bumblebee of the genus Bombus<\/em>.\u00a0 While we would have liked to see more of the body from the side, this one will surely give someone an opportunity to try to identify it from its wing venation. [See July 11]<\/p>\n

This is a bush cricket, or katydid, of the Family Tettigoniidae.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think it is in its final instar, so it may be difficult to identify further.<\/p>\n

I believe this is a soldier beetle of the Family Cantharidae.\u00a0 It is hiding its head, which may make it hard to pin down to species. [See July 10 morning]<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t sure when I first saw it whether this is a bug or a beetle, but now I\u2019m pretty sure it\u2019s a bug.\u00a0 I think I can see its rostrum. [See July 10 morning]<\/p>\n

I would call this a greenbottle fly, of the genus Lucilia<\/em>.\u00a0 The tiny speck near its middle leg looks like a small aphid.\u00a0 The other small insect near the circumference of the yellow inner part of the flower is a thrips. [See July 10 morning]<\/p>\n

I think I can safely say that this is a beetle.\u00a0 I\u2019d be very impressed if anyone can go further. [See July 10 morning]<\/p>\n

I believe this is the pupa of a ladybeetle (Coccinellidae). \u00a0Which one?<\/p>\n

I ought to know this one, but I don\u2019t!\u00a0 Do you call them ladybugs or ladybirds?\u00a0 Since they are obviously neither bugs nor birds, perhaps we should just call them ladybeetles.\u00a0 (Or gentleman beetles for the males?) [See July 10 morning]<\/p>\n
