{"id":8522,"date":"2019-07-07T19:02:18","date_gmt":"2019-07-08T02:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=8522"},"modified":"2019-07-09T10:27:04","modified_gmt":"2019-07-09T17:27:04","slug":"july-7-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=8522","title":{"rendered":"July 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>2019 July 7<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>The monthy Butterfly Walk was scheduled for today, and five hardy souls turned up, although it was completely overcast, windy, cold, and just starting to rain.\u00a0 Cancel the Walk?\u00a0 Not a bit of it!\u00a0 We decided that we would walk along the Lochside Trail from Lohbrunner\u2019s to Blenkinsop Lake to see if we could spot any caterpillars of the <strong>Satyr Comma.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It wasn\u2019t quite so windy or cold there as on Mount Tolmie, though the rain steadily increased until at the end of the afternoon it was fairly roaring with pain.\u00a0\u00a0 We did what we set out to do, and Juliet Pendray found not one, but two <strong>Satyr Comma <\/strong>caterpillars. The first was quite tiny, only 7 mm long.\u00a0 The second was a later instar and was just preparing for ecdysis into the next instar.\u00a0\u00a0 Here they are:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 266px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image008.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/pastedImage-68.png\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Emmelina monodactyla <\/em>(Lep.: Pterophoridae)\u00a0 Val George<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0 We also saw <em>Rattus norvegicus, <\/em>but that\u2019s not an invertebrate, so it doesn\u2019t count!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 We also saw, but didn\u2019t photograph, a slug of the <em> Arion ater <\/em>group.\u00a0 Fortunately Cheryl Hoyle had photographed one of these slugs, also on the Lochside Trail, on the same day.\u00a0 There are supposed to be several (three or more?) species in this group, separable only by dissection, although ours is supposed to be <strong><em>Arion rufus<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 662px;
