{"id":8200,"date":"2019-06-11T20:01:10","date_gmt":"2019-06-12T03:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=8200"},"modified":"2019-06-11T20:06:15","modified_gmt":"2019-06-12T03:06:15","slug":"june-11-evening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=8200","title":{"rendered":"June 11 evening"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>2019 June 11 evening<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;&nbsp; Jeremy Tatum writes:&nbsp; I went to the small field just south of the Tsartlip Cemetary on West Saanich Road halfway between Stelly&#8217;s Cross Road and Mount Newton Cross Road, from where Tim Zurowski &nbsp;reported large numbers of  <strong>Field Crescents <\/strong>this morning.&nbsp; It&#8217;s a tiny field smothered with huge numbers of Ox-eye Daisies.&nbsp; Although I saw no notices, it is presumably private property belonging to the Tsartlip First Nation, and in any case it wouldn&#8217;t be a good idea   to tramp all over the field.&nbsp; I stood just at the entrance and I could see lots of the butterflies at close quarters.&nbsp; I didn&#8217;t attempt to count them, but I&#8217;d have no difficulty at all in believing 100 or so.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp; Aziza Cooper drew my attention to a huge collection of superb photographs of local moths obtained by Tim Zurowski at&nbsp;  <a href=\"https:\/\/timzurowski.smugmug.com\/Galleries\/Insects\/Moths\/\">https:\/\/timzurowski.smugmug.com\/Galleries\/Insects\/Moths\/<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp; This will be a wonderful reference for us.&nbsp;&nbsp; I had no idea of their exisence before.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;&nbsp; This evening, I found the curious structure below on Reed Canary Grass at Rithet&#8217;s Bog.&nbsp; As you can see, it has a caterpillar inside!&nbsp; I am not sure of its identity, but for the moment, and until I get an adult moth from it,   I&#8217;m labelling as probably <strong><em>Psyche casta<\/em><\/strong><em>. <\/em>If it turns out to be a female, she&#8217;ll be wingless and she won&#8217;t emerge from her house, so I&#8217;ll never know for sure!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"width: 624px; margin: 5px;\" class=\"\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"null\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" originalwidth=\"624\" originalheight=\"456\" width=\"579.2\" height=\"423.26153846153846\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/pastedImage-45.png\">  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Probably <em>Psyche casta <\/em>(Lep.: Psychidae)&nbsp; Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;&nbsp; Aziza Cooper writes: Today, June 11, at Royal Roads University I found my first-of-year  <strong>Essex Skipper<\/strong>.
