I think I can see four varieties.\u00a0 We also saw the\u00a0moth, of which there were many. \u00a0Also in the area we saw four <strong>Western Spring Azures<\/strong> and three <strong>Sara<\/strong> <strong>Orangetips<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum writes.\u00a0 The moth is <strong><em>Mesoleuca gratulata.<\/em><\/strong> Its caterpillar feeds on <em>Rubus<\/em> sp., including very often on the introduced Himalayan Blackberry, as well as on native Thimbleberry.\u00a0 Ron\u2019s moth is on <em>Rubus<\/em>, and it may be contemplating egg-laying.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 560px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"M gratulata.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/M-gratulata.jpg\" width=\"568.8\" height=\"494.38199999999995\" name=\"null\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Mesoleuca gratulata <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae)\u00a0 Ron Flower<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0 Most of the flies are <strong>blow flies <\/strong> \u00a0of the family Calliphoridae.\u00a0 The green ones are<strong> greenbottles <\/strong>of the genus <strong><em>Lucilia<\/em><\/strong>, and almost certainly <strong><em>L. sericata<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Greenbottles have charming habits.\u00a0 Some of them (I don\u2019t think <em>sericata<\/em>, but close relatives) lay their eggs on the nostrils of frogs and toads, and you don\u2019t want to know what happens next.\u00a0 The larger flies in the photograph are probably in the genus <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong><em>Calliphora<\/em><\/strong>, some of which are known as <strong>bluebottles.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>One of them bears the charming name <strong><em>Calliphora vomitoria<\/em><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong>though I\u2019m not sure if Ron\u2019s is exactly that species.\u00a0 The adults of both species are often seen on excrement as well as on corpses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 624px; margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image004.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"blow flies.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/blow-flies.jpg\" width=\"568.8\" height=\"444.61199999999997\" name=\"null\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Greenbottles and bluebottles <em>Lucilia <\/em>and <em> Calliphora <\/em>(Dip.: Calliphoridae)\u00a0 Ron Flower<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0 Jochen M\u00f6hr reports this morning\u2019s tally at his house in Metchosin,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">48\u00b023\u201930.26\u201d N, 123\u00b034\u201931.50\u201d W and some 180m above sea level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">(Thanks for the exquisite\u00a0precision\u00a0&#8211;\u00a020\u00a0centimetres!\u00a0\u00a0 Jeremy)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>10 Venusia obsoleta<\/em><\/strong><strong>\/<\/strong><strong><em>pearsalli<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>5 Melanolophia imitata<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>2 Drepanulatrix monicaria<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>1 Cladara limitaria<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>1 Hydriomena manzanita<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>1 Behrensia conchiformis<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">and<strong><em> 2 Eupithecia<\/em><\/strong>s<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2018 April 18 afternoon \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Ron Flower writes:\u00a0 Yesterday April 17 at noon we went to the\u00a0 Goldstream River near the nature house and found the dead rodent with flies.
