{"id":7131,"date":"2018-09-19T09:52:01","date_gmt":"2018-09-19T16:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=7131"},"modified":"2018-09-19T09:57:43","modified_gmt":"2018-09-19T16:57:43","slug":"september-19-morning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=7131","title":{"rendered":"September 19 morning"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>2018 September 19 morning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;&nbsp; Val George reports an <strong>American Lady <\/strong>  from Mount Douglas, September 17.&nbsp; The circumstances of the discovery were somewhat reminiscent of the first of last year&#8217;s American Lady sightings.&nbsp; Val was doing his Monthly Butterfly Count on Mount Douglas.&nbsp; In addition to 20  <strong>Cabbage Whites<\/strong>, Val saw two ladies, one of which was identified with certainty as a  <strong>Painted Lady<\/strong>. Val photographed the second one under the assumption that it, too, was a Painted Lady, and only later, on examination of the photograph, did he realize that it was an  <strong>American Lady.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"width: 567px; margin: 5px;\" class=\"\" src=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/jtatum\/AppData\/Local\/Temp\/msohtmlclip1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"null\" title=\"American Lady.JPG\" originalwidth=\"1200\" originalheight=\"798\" width=\"542.4\" height=\"360.69599999999997\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/American-Lady.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">American Lady <em>Vanessa virginiensis <\/em>(Lep.: Nymphalidae)&nbsp; Val George<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;&nbsp; Although the American Lady can easily be recognized if you see the underside, it is more tricky from the upperside alone.&nbsp; Jeremy Tatum writes that there are two features that he uses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"null\" title=\"pastedImage.png\" originalwidth=\"539\" originalheight=\"554\" rszimgcmd=\"100\" setheight=\"483\" setwidth=\"470\" hasheight=\"false\" style=\"width: 470px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/pastedImage.png\"><\/div>\n<p>  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; The big white patch is pointed at the bottom.&nbsp; Rounded or blunt in Painted Lady. (Applies to upperside only.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">2. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Below the big white patch there is a little round white spot. &nbsp;(The pointy end of the big white patch is pointing to it.) &nbsp;This is characteristic of the American Lady.  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;&nbsp; Ron Flower writes:&nbsp; On the17th of September, we went to Panama Flats and saw at least  <strong>12 Cabbage<\/strong> <strong>Whites<\/strong> and <strong>1 Lorquin&#8217;s Admiral<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;&nbsp; Nathan Fisk writes that on&nbsp; September 17 he saw a flyby on Sidney Island that he was pretty confident was a  <strong>Red Admiral.<\/strong><strong>&nbsp; <\/strong>Jeremy Tatum writes that on September 18 he saw a flyby at Panama Flats that he thought &#8211; with not much confidence!
