{"id":7093,"date":"2018-09-11T19:21:53","date_gmt":"2018-09-12T02:21:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=7093"},"modified":"2018-09-11T19:26:22","modified_gmt":"2018-09-12T02:26:22","slug":"september-11-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=7093","title":{"rendered":"September 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>2018 September 11<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Two small points about the Black Witches shown in yesterday&#8217;s posting.&nbsp; 1.&nbsp; Libby estimated the wingspan of her Witch to be about seven inches.&nbsp; Now, before you read on, go to your cupboard or drawer and bring   out a ruler and remind yourself of exactly what seven inches looks like.&nbsp; Once you&#8217;ve done that, you&#8217;ll see how excited we are over having two Black Witches on the Island.&nbsp; 2.&nbsp; The two Black Witches shown on yesterday&#8217;s posting looked rather different.&nbsp; Apparently   they are sexually dimorphic.&nbsp; I have added the sex to the caption of each of yesterday&#8217;s photographs.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I wonder if &#8220;male Black&nbsp; Witch&#8221; is a contradiction in terms. Should it be &#8220;Black Warlock&#8221;?&nbsp; And what about a male Painted Lady?&nbsp; Should that not be a Painted   Gentleman?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;&nbsp; Now more moth news from Jochen M\u00f6hr in Metchosin.<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\">&nbsp;&nbsp; The first is a pterophorid moth.&nbsp;&nbsp; It looks a lot like  <em style=\"\">Oidaematophorus mathewianus<\/em>.&nbsp; The trouble is that there are lots of pterophorids that also look like this, and, because of the way they hold their wings, they are difficult to identify from photographs.&nbsp; Our commonest species of this group   that we get in Victoria is <em style=\"\">Emmelina monodactyla<\/em>.&nbsp; Jochen M\u00f6hr    <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;&nbsp; Two geometrid moths, &nbsp;<em>Triphosa haesitata<\/em> and  <em>Coryphysta meadii<\/em>, sometimes look so much alike that we dread being sent photographs of them!&nbsp; Today we had photographs from Jochen M\u00f6hr and from Annie Pang.&nbsp;  <em>Coryphista meadii<\/em><em><strong> <\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;occurs in several forms, not all of which look like  <em>T. haesitata<\/em>.&nbsp; Fortunately, Jochen&#8217;s photograph below is one of the forms of  <strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Coryphista meadii<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>  that does not resemble <em>Triphosa haesitata<\/em> and is therefore easy to identify, even though this is a somewhat worn specimen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"null\" title=\"P1110686(1).JPG\" originalwidth=\"1200\" originalheight=\"674\" width=\"568.8\" height=\"319.476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/P11106861.jpg\"><br \/>  <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Coryphista meadii <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae)&nbsp;
