{"id":7081,"date":"2018-09-10T14:36:55","date_gmt":"2018-09-10T21:36:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=7081"},"modified":"2018-09-12T17:53:05","modified_gmt":"2018-09-13T00:53:05","slug":"september-10-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=7081","title":{"rendered":"September 10"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>2018 September 10<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Exciting News!<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>On August 28, RBCM staff member Meg Sugrue found a large, dead tropical moth on the road beside the Museum.\u00a0\u00a0 She took it in to show Claudia Copley, and, although it was badly damaged, Claudia identified it as a <strong>Black Witch<\/strong>.\u00a0 There are a few previous British Columbia records of this spectacular moth.\u00a0 We had to ask the question as to whether it made its way here under its own steam, so to speak, or whether it was somehow brought up here on a car.\u00a0 Meg tells us that, when she found it, it was still \u201cbleeding\u201d, indicating that it had just been killed shortly before, so that it is likely that it made its own way here.\u00a0 In any case, this is an exciting find by Meg.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 I alerted Jochen M\u00f6hr and Libby Avis, who run UV moth traps, to keep a look-out for the species, and, sure enough, Libby found one at Port Alberni late last night!\u00a0 There must be more of them around \u2013 so keep a look-out for this impressive moth.\u00a0\u00a0 The two found so far are shown below.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"width: 455px;
