\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Here\u2019s a fly photographed a couple of weeks ago by someone and kindly identified by Michelle Locke as Dasysyrphus intrudens<\/em><\/strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Apologies for the delay \u2013 it kind of got lost in the heap.\u00a0 And more apologies – I had wrongly attributed the photo to Jochen.\u00a0 Does anyone recognize it and can tell me whose it is?!<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Yesterday, July 1, we had the monthly VNHS Butterfly Walk, which is held regularly on the first Sunday of each month, led by Gordon Hart.\u00a0 Nine enthusiasts attended.\u00a0 Jeff Gaskin kept count, as follows:<\/p>\n

On Mt. Tolmie\u00a0\u00a0 20 Lorquin\u2019s Admirals,\u00a0 1 Western Tiger Swallowtail,\u00a0 and 1 or 2 Cabbage Whites.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At McIntyre Road reservoir\u00a0 :\u00a0 several Cabbage Whites<\/strong> and a few Essex Skippers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

At Island View Beach from the north parking lot to Saanichton Spit parking lot\u00a0 :\u00a0\u00a0 16 Lorquin\u2019s Admirals,\u00a0 30 Essex Skippers,\u00a0 2 Western Tiger Swallowtails, 1 Ringlet, and 4 Cabbage Whites<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Lots of dragonflies<\/strong> and sand wasps<\/strong> were seen (photos below), as well as an Otter with two young cubs (kittens?\u00a0 otterlets?\u00a0 Is there a name for young otters?).<\/p>\n
