{"id":5996,"date":"2018-05-04T19:37:32","date_gmt":"2018-05-05T02:37:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=5996"},"modified":"2018-05-04T19:37:47","modified_gmt":"2018-05-05T02:37:47","slug":"may-4-evening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=5996","title":{"rendered":"May 4, evening"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>2018 May 4 evening<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Jeremy Tatum writes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Only one observation reported this evening &#8211; namely that a  <strong>Red Admiral<\/strong> was again on the Mount Tolmie reservoir, at about 6:30 pm.&nbsp; No California Tortoiseshell seen there this evening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;&nbsp; No further observations this evening, but a nomenclatural problem has arisen.&nbsp; Viewers will have noticed that on this site I list the elfins in the genus  <em>Incisalia<\/em>.&nbsp; From time to time, someone will point out to me that the genus &#8220;should be&#8221;  <em>Callophrys<\/em> and that <em>Incisalia<\/em> is &#8220;invalid&#8221;.&nbsp; I am well aware of the  <em>Callophrys<\/em>\/<em>Incisalia <\/em>problem, and the reasons for it, and there are reasons why I have been using the genus name  <em>Incisalia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp; However, an enormous new complication has arisen.&nbsp; Over the years, the Cedar Hairstreak has undergone numerous changes in its scientific and its English names.&nbsp; I had hoped that it had finally settled down to  <em>Mitoura rosneri<\/em>.&nbsp; Apparently some taxonomists now declare that it is <em>  Callophrys gryneus<\/em>. This I cannot understand at all&nbsp; &#8211;&nbsp; I cannot see that the Cedar Hairstreak belongs in  <em>Callophrys<\/em> or in <em>Incisalia <\/em>at all.&nbsp; Until the &#8220;new&#8221; name gets general acceptance I shall continue on this site to list it as  <em>Mitoura rosneri. <\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em>The pronunciation of <em>Mitoura<\/em>, by the way, is Myto Yura. It means Thread Tail.<em>  <\/em>Perhaps we shall see some during the Butterfly Walk on Sunday.
