(Acari: Acaridae)\u00a0 Scott Gilmore<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>USING THE INDEX<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>The Invertebrate Alert site has an Index.\u00a0 This note is written to help you use it.\u00a0 It is a little tricky, but after a few goes you may get used to it!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To find the Index, log on to the Invert Alert site in the usual way.\u00a0 One way is to log on to the VNHS website and click on Invertebrate Alert under POPULAR ITEMS.\u00a0 Another way is to click on the link <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?cat=8\">www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?cat=8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then, when you are logged on to the Invert Alert web site, you\u2019ll see that at the very top line on the site, in large capitals, are the words INVERTEBRATE ALERT. Click on that title, and that will take into the Index.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, suppose you want to find a photograph of a particular butterfly or other invertebrate, you have to know its scientific name, because all of the creatures are listed by scientific name.\u00a0 Thus, suppose that you are looking for a photograph of the Western Pine Elfin, you have to know its scientific name, which you may know as <em>Callophrys eryphon<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Near the left hand side of the Index, you\u2019ll find a small window that says \u201cSearch Document\u201d.\u00a0 Type in there the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">species name<\/span> eryphon, and click. (You needn\u2019t use italics.)\u00a0 I advise against typing the whole name Callophrys eryphon.\u00a0\u00a0 Invertebrates are often moved by the taxonomists from one genus to another.\u00a0 Indeed in this Index the Western Pine Elfin is listed as <em>Incisalia eryphon<\/em>.\u00a0 Your search will have failed if you typed Callophrys eryphon, but it will succeed if you just type eryphon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Having found <em>Incisalia eryphon<\/em>, you will find a list of dates under which this species appears.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Make a note<\/span> of the date(s) that you wish to look at, and then go back to the Invertebrate Alert site.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The snag now is that you don\u2019t know on which page to find the entry for the date that you want.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are two procedures.\u00a0 If the date you are searching for is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> November 2014 or earlier<\/span>, go to the bottom of the page.\u00a0 There you will find a list of pages, 1 to 9 and finishing at Next.\u00a0 Click on the largest number (just to the left of Next).\u00a0 At the time of writing this number is 104, but it will probably be larger by the time you read this. When you have done that, you will find yourself at June-July 2014.\u00a0 Go to the bottom of the page, and near the bottom you will find a list of months, which you can click on, and your search will soon be over.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If the date you are searching for is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> later than November 2014<\/span> your search is going to be a little trickier.\u00a0 Let\u2019s suppose that we wish to find the image of <em>eryphon <\/em>on 16 April 08.\u00a0 (This is written in the order year, month, day.)\u00a0 We have no idea which page it is on, and at the time of writing there are 104 pages.\u00a0 Let\u2019s make a wild guess and we\u2019ll try and find page 50.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a quick way of finding page 50:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Near to top of the Invert Alert page you will find\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?cat=8\"> www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?cat=8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Between ? and cat\u00a0\u00a0 type\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 paged=50&amp;\u00a0\u00a0 and then click\u00a0\u00a0 This will take you to page 50, which is for 2017 January 31.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You have got to go much further to reach 2016 April 08.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s try page 75.\u00a0 Go to the top of the page and change paged=50&amp; to paged=75&amp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This takes you to 2016 June 14.\u00a0\u00a0 You\u2019ve still got a little way to go.\u00a0 It\u2019s actually on page 88.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u2019Fraid this is a bit of a rigmarole, but it\u2019s the best we can manage at present.
