Ian Cruickshank<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Robb Bennett writes:&nbsp; These two spiders are old friends, both introduced from Britain or western Europe about 100 years ago:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The reddish one is <strong><em>Dysdera crocata<\/em><\/strong>, known to the British as the &#8220;slater slayer&#8221; because of its preference for preying upon woodlice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The other is one of our two species of <em>Eratigena<\/em> (previously classified in  <em>Tegenaria<\/em>) &#8211; either <strong><em>Eratigena agrestis<\/em><\/strong> (hobo spider) or  <em>Eratigena atrica<\/em> (giant house spider).&nbsp; I suspect it is <em>E. agrestis <\/em>  based on its subtle golden hue &#8211; <em>atrica<\/em> is usually much darker\/grayer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Jeremy Tatum writes:&nbsp; Latin and Greek Scholars will be wondering what &#8220;Eratigena&#8221;
