The photo shows one on a log flattened down against the cold wind of the ocean. Two other observers saw at least four other Ladies in the grassy area at mid-spit. It certainly is a good year for Painted Ladies.\u00a0 [It is indeed &#8211; though occasionally in past years we have had truly massive invasions, with caterpillars in almost every thistle patch.\u00a0 Jeremy].<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"I Bfly Pa Lady 1b.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/I-Bfly-Pa-Lady-1b.jpg\" width=\"596\" height=\"446.4856156501726\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Painted Lady <em>Vanessa cardui <\/em>(Lep.: Nymphalidae)\u00a0 Aziza Cooper<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Following my appeal yesterday for photographs of one of the paler sulphurs, Val George writes:\u00a0 Here is a (not very good)\u00a0photo of one of the pale sulphurs at McIntyre Reservoir that I took a few days before our butterfly walk.\u00a0 I wondered then whether it could be a Clouded Sulphur.\u00a0 However, I concluded that it probably wasn&#8217;t possible from this photo to tell the species with certainty.\u00a0 What do you think?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Tatum writes: I think I have to agree with Val.\u00a0 It is tempting to say that it is a Clouded Sulphur, but honesty compels me to say that I cannot be certain.\u00a0 Is it a male or a female?\u00a0 (Can\u2019t quite see whether the terminal band contains yellow spots.)\u00a0 I don\u2019t see any sign of orange. What about the dark ST spots on the fw und?\u00a0 (That\u2019s jargon for subterminal spots on the forewing underside.)\u00a0 The one spot is fairly well defined (therefore probably Orange Sulphur) but there is only one of them (therefore probably Clouded Sulphur).\u00a0 So we remain tantalized!\u00a0 More photos needed.\u00a0 We\u2019ll figure it out eventually!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image004.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Clouded Sulphur Qu..jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Clouded-Sulphur-Qu..jpg\" width=\"596\" height=\"397.3333333333333\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Sulphur <em>Colias <\/em>sp.
