{"id":5115,"date":"2017-09-23T16:18:10","date_gmt":"2017-09-23T23:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=5115"},"modified":"2017-09-25T16:04:26","modified_gmt":"2017-09-25T23:04:26","slug":"september-23-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=5115","title":{"rendered":"September 23"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2017 September 23<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 I visited McIntyre Reservoir today in hopes of seeing an American Lady.\u00a0 No such luck, and unfortunately most of the Teasels are now past flowering.\u00a0 There are a very few Teasels left, and lots of other flowers, so it is still worth a look to find Painted or American Ladies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I did see from one to three (not sure which) <strong>Orange<\/strong><strong> Sulphurs.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The one I had a good look at was obviously a female (yellow spots inside the broad terminal band), and it was every bit as deep orange as a male Orange Sulphur.\u00a0 This makes me think again quite seriously about those paler sulphurs seen during the VNHS September Butterfly Walk.\u00a0 I may have too hastily dismissed them as female Orange Sulphurs, and I now wonder if in fact they may have been Clouded Sulphurs.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think they were the form <em>helice<\/em> that occurs in many female sulphur species, because forma <em>helice <\/em>is almost as white as a Cabbage White.\u00a0 If anyone has photos of these paler sulphurs from the VNHS Butterfly Walk, we would be very interested to see them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There were still lots of <strong>Cabbage Whites <\/strong>at McIntyre reservoir.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rosemary Jorna writes from Kemp Lake Road:\u00a0 I do not know if this spider lived in our house or came in with me as I had been working in the yard. We I came in for coffee and I settled down on the couch.\u00a0\u00a0 After a few minutes it ran down my arm and ended up on our deck for photos before a quick trip out back to a new home.<\/p>\n<p>Robb Bennett writes:<\/p>\n<div>It could be a female of <em>Steatoda grossa<\/em> but my first guess would be <em>Steatoda albomaculata<\/em>. \u00a0<em>Steatoda<\/em> <em>grossa<\/em> females are usually mostly dark brown but they often have some amount of pale patterning. Males of <em>grossa<\/em> are patterned and this is likely the same scenario as in <em>Latrodectus<\/em> (same family &#8211; Theridiidae) where the adult males retain juvenile patterning and some females do, too, especially subadults.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Steadota grossa.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Steadota-grossa.jpg\" width=\"596\" height=\"470.84\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Steatoda sp.<\/em>(Ara.: Theridiidae)\u00a0 Rosemary Jorna<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bill Savale found some tiny beetles in a long-dried specimen of a fungus that he had had for some years.\u00a0 Many thanks to Charlene Wood for identifying them and photographing them.
