(Lep.: Erebidae &#8211; Erebinae)\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I went to McIntyre reservoir today.\u00a0 There were still hundreds of <strong>Cabbage Whites<\/strong> in flight.\u00a0 I also saw one (or more?) pristine <strong>Orange Sulphur<\/strong> and one (or more?) pristine <strong>Painted Lady.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The sulphur was a full, rich orange.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t see any of the paler sulphurs that we saw during the VNHS September Butterfly Walk.\u00a0 It would be nice to get some good photographs of these.\u00a0 Although we assumed that they were female Orange Sulphurs, I am not 100 per cent certain, and I am toying with the possibility that they may have been Clouded Sulphurs &#8211; a different species.\u00a0 In any case today I had a look at the Brussels Sprouts plants to see if I could spot any caterpillars.\u00a0 I found one caterpillar each of <strong>Cabbage Looper<\/strong> and <strong>Cabbage White Butterfly.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The adult Cabbage Looper is the <strong>Ni Moth.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong> The mark on the upperside of the forewing is supposed to resemble the Greek letter nu (n);\u00a0 \u201cNi\u201d is the Latinized form of Greek \u201cnu\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 The Ni Moth is a plusiine (i.e. belongs to the Subfamily Plusiinae of the Family Noctuidae).\u00a0 Most of the plusiine caterpillars don\u2019t have the usual complement of abdominal prolegs (count them), and they walk in a semi-looper fashion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image008.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Ni moth.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Ni-moth.jpg\" width=\"596\" height=\"411.7366666666666\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Ni Moth <em>Trichoplusia ni <\/em>(Lep.: Noctuidae &#8211; Plusiinae)\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image010.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Pieris rapae la.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Pieris-rapae-la.jpg\" width=\"596\" height=\"449.97999999999996\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Cabbage White <em>Pieris rapae <\/em>(Lep.: Pieridae)\u00a0\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Message just received from Ron Flower, who, too, visited McIntyre reservoir today.\u00a0 He writes:\u00a0 Around noon at the reservoir we saw <strong>2 <\/strong><strong>Woodland<\/strong><strong> Skippers,<\/strong> <strong>6 Painted Ladies,<\/strong> <strong>4 Orange Sulphurs<\/strong>, <strong>2 Purplish Coppers<\/strong>, <strong> dozens of Cabbage Whites<\/strong>, and a new moth to us.
