Assuming the final instar is number five, the August 18 photograph (third instar) showed a red dorsal stripe, and the August 20 photograph showed blackish hairs on the thoracic segments, both features that were unfamiliar to me.\u00a0 However, the final instar, shown below, shows that it is the familiar Yellow Woolly Bear.\u00a0 As soon as I realized this I offered it some <em>Plantago<\/em> to eat, which it obviously relished.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"yellow woolly.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/yellow-woolly.jpg\" width=\"596\" height=\"397.3333333333333\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Yellow Woolly Bear <em>Spilosoma virginica <\/em>(Lep.: Erebidae &#8211; Arctiinae)\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The apparent geometrid-like caterpillar shown on August 24 is now a little larger, and is now obviously not a geometrid.\u00a0 It looks as though it may be on its way to being something quite exciting.\u00a0 Maybe Erebidae.\u00a0\u00a0 [Added later &#8211; Yes, <em>Zale<\/em>, Erebidae]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image004.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 443px;\" title=\"not geom.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/not-geom.jpg\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Zale\u00a0<\/em>sp. The Red Alders that overhung our site had large numbers of <strong>sawfly larvae<\/strong> busily feeding on the leaves. Some branches were denuded completely. When I pulled a branch down to photograph them they all went into a defensive pasture in unison \u2014 raising their curled rear ends. It was interesting to watch. I woke in the night and thought it might be raining but seeing stars through the tent window, I realized that it was the frass from the larvae that was raining down! I have never seen this species before and would be interested to learn more about them. (Photograph and identification below.)<\/p>\n<p>Ren continues: \u00a0This is a late piece of information but when I was doing a bird survey on Mount Tuam on Salt Spring on August 1st, I witnessed the largest number of <strong>Common Woodnymphs<\/strong> on the wing in any one area that I have ever seen. I saw 1 <strong>Hoary\/Zephyr Comma<\/strong> and 1 <strong>Green Comma<\/strong>. Also present there were at least 6 <strong>Mariposa Coppers<\/strong>, and several <strong>Hydaspe Fritillaries<\/strong>. Nearby, along Alpine Road (NW of the parking lot for Paradise Meadows) were 2 <strong>Hoary\/Zephyr Commas<\/strong> and 1 <strong>Green Comma<\/strong>, 1 <strong> Lorquin&#8217;s Admiral<\/strong>, and 3 Mariposa Coppers. At the parking lot at the base of the Sunrise Quad Chairlift was a fresh <strong>Painted Lady<\/strong>, at least 5 <strong>Anna Blues<\/strong>, 2 <strong> Mariposa Coppers<\/strong> and 1 <strong>Branded Skipper<\/strong>.
