{"id":4877,"date":"2017-08-27T20:11:53","date_gmt":"2017-08-28T03:11:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=4877"},"modified":"2017-08-29T08:51:34","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T15:51:34","slug":"august-27-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=4877","title":{"rendered":"August 27"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2017 August 27<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Jochen Moehr sends some photographs from around his Metchosin house, August 26.\u00a0\u00a0 The first is a jumping spider <strong><em>Salticus scenicus<\/em><\/strong> with a moth, which I think may be a bit too far gone to identify, although I think it is a geometrid.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"S scenicus.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/S-scenicus.jpg\" width=\"596\" height=\"444.69884169884165\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Salticus scenicus <\/em>(Ara.: Salticidae)\u00a0 Jochen Moehr<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The second is a handsome geometrid moth <strong><em>Ennomos magnaria<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image004.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Jochen geometrid.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Jochen-geometrid.jpg\" width=\"596\" height=\"459.9133333333333\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Ennomos magnaria <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae)\u00a0\u00a0 Jochen Moehr<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The third one &#8211; a noctuid moth &#8211; is more difficult.\u00a0 The best that Libby Avis and Jeremy Tatum can come up with is probably <strong><em>Euxoa <\/em><\/strong><strong>sp.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is one of the largest noctuid genera, so that doesn\u2019t narrow it down a great deal.\u00a0 As Libby points out, this genus is one where several species are similar, and there can be quite a variation among individuals of the same species.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image006.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Jochen noctuid.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Jochen-noctuid.jpg\" width=\"596\" height=\"404.28666666666663\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Probably <em>Euxoa <\/em>sp. (Lep.: Noctuidae)\u00a0 Jochen Moehr<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jochen writes:\u00a0 One thing I find worth mentioning is that I always see Pine Whites, but<br \/>\nalways only single ones.\u00a0 In the years after the total devastation of<br \/>\nthe insect world because of the aerial bombing with BTK in 1999 &#8211;<br \/>\nperhaps around 2005 &#8211; I often saw many, just driving by the Royal Roads<br \/>\nproperty along Metchosin Road.\u00a0 Once I counted 28 in one pass.<\/p>\n<p>What is the reason for the current scarcity?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Good question!\u00a0 Who knows?\u00a0 They vary greatly in numbers from year to year, and I think most watchers would agree that Pine White numbers have been rather low this year. The species overwinters in the egg stage, and the young caterpillars hatch in the spring.
