{"id":4706,"date":"2017-08-02T15:59:46","date_gmt":"2017-08-02T22:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=4706"},"modified":"2017-08-05T07:11:57","modified_gmt":"2017-08-05T14:11:57","slug":"august-2-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=4706","title":{"rendered":"August 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2017 August 02<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Ken Vaughan photographed the beetle below at Fork Lake, Highlands, on July 29.\u00a0 Thanks to Scott Gilmore for identifying it as an <strong>earth-boring dung beetle <\/strong><strong><em>Odonteus obesus<\/em><\/strong>, the first member of its Family to appear on the site.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"dung beetle.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/dung-beetle.jpg\" width=\"596\" height=\"619.3883626522328\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Earth-boring dung beetle <em>Odonteus obesus <\/em> (Col.: Geotrupidae) Ken Vaughan<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 Barbara McLintock photographed the beetle below on July 21, and we are again indebted to Scott Gilmore for its identification, as probably <strong><em>Trichocnemis spiculatus<\/em><\/strong>. Scott writes that he would like a clearer photo of the pronotum to know for sure. [There is a similar species, <em>S. pauper<\/em>, and it would need a close look with a magnifying glass to be sure which it is.\u00a0 Jeremy]\u00a0 This is a very large beetle, about 2\u00bd inches in length.\u00a0 One of its common names is <strong>Ponderous Borer<\/strong>.\u00a0 It also seems sometimes to be called a Pine Sawyer &#8211; a name also given to Jochen Moehr\u2019s July 31 beetle!\u00a0 I have therefore removed any English name from the caption to both beetles and have left them with just a scientific name.\u00a0 The one below has a long ovipositor!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image004.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"McL beetle.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/McL-beetle.jpg\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Trichocnemis spiculatus <\/em>(Col.: Cerambycidae)\u00a0 BarbaraMcLintock<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Liam Singh sends a photograph of a <strong>clearwing moth<\/strong> from Pedder Bay today.\u00a0 Although it is much yellower than the one on Kathleen Burton\u2019s photograph (see July 26 posting), it is the same species, <strong><em>Synanthedon bibionipennis<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Liam\u2019s is a female; Kathleen\u2019s was a male.\u00a0 Here are the three indications that Liam\u2019s is a female:<\/p>\n<p>She is fatter (carrying eggs!).\u00a0 She is much yellower.\u00a0 The hairs on her labial palpi are all yellow not tipped with brown.\u00a0 It is remarkable to receive photos of sesiids within a few days of each other.\u00a0 Strawberry has been recorded as the larval foodplant of <em>S. bibionipennis<\/em>.\u00a0 The person who named it <em>bibionipennis <\/em>(Jean Baptiste Boisduval &#8211;
