{"id":4629,"date":"2017-07-23T15:28:47","date_gmt":"2017-07-23T22:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=4629"},"modified":"2017-07-23T15:36:56","modified_gmt":"2017-07-23T22:36:56","slug":"july-23-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=4629","title":{"rendered":"July 23"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2017 July 23<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; Jeremy Tatum writes:&nbsp; Back from holidays, so Invertebrate Alert is back in business &#8211; slowly as I recover from jet lag.&nbsp;&nbsp; I saw lots of butterflies on the Sussex South Downs, largely thanks to Sussex butterfly enthusiast David Harris.&nbsp; One of the most   memorable was a Chalkhill Blue nectaring on a Round-headed Rampion &#8211; both species iconic symbols of the Sussex South Downs.&nbsp; Also, not one, but two sightings of the absolutely enormous syrphid fly  <em>Volucella zonaria<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Anyway, some unfinished business first. The moth\/caddisfly with the very long antennae photographed by Ken Vaughan (see July 5 posting) has been identified by Claudia Copley and Libby Avis as a  <strong>caddisfly<\/strong> (as originally suggested by Ken) of the family <strong>  Leptoceridae<\/strong>, possibly, suggested by Libby, of the genus <strong><em>Oecetis<\/em><\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp; More unfinished business.&nbsp; Nick Doe found several of these small moths on Gabriola Island in June 27.&nbsp; He has since identified them as  <strong><em>Protodeltote albidula<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" class=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" originalheight=\"696\" originalwidth=\"613\" name=\"\" title=\"Protodeltote albidula.jpg\" height=\"676.6982055464927\" width=\"596\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Protodeltote-albidula.jpg\"><br \/>  <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Protodeltote albidula <\/em>(Lep.: Noctuidae)&nbsp; Nick Doe<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Val George sends a photograph of <strong><em>Coryphista meadii<\/em><\/strong><strong>  <\/strong>from his Oak Bay garden, July 16.
