{"id":4409,"date":"2017-06-11T19:10:25","date_gmt":"2017-06-12T02:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=4409"},"modified":"2017-06-11T19:16:27","modified_gmt":"2017-06-12T02:16:27","slug":"june-11-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=4409","title":{"rendered":"June 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2017<\/strong><strong>&nbsp; <\/strong><strong>June 11<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Several butterflyers visited Eddy&#8217;s Storage (Stelly&#8217;s Cross Road, west of West Saanich Road, Brentwood Bay) to see the  <strong>Field Crescents <\/strong>there.&nbsp; There must be at least a dozen or more. &nbsp;&nbsp;Aziza Cooper sends a photograph of one &#8211; nectaring on an Ox-eye Daisy, which is where you will most likely see one.&nbsp;&nbsp; It would be nice to get a few more photographs, so that   we can see the difference between the males and the females.&nbsp; At one time the two sexes were thought to be different species, and they had different scientific names &#8211;&nbsp;  <em>Phyciodes campestris <\/em>and <em>P. pratensis.<\/em><em>&nbsp; <\/em>You&#8217;ll find both names in the books. To complicate things still further, some authors are now using the name  <em>P. pulchella<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp; Also at Eddy&#8217;s, Aziza reports a <strong>Western Tiger Swallowtail  <\/strong>and a <strong>Cabbage White.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" originalheight=\"885\" originalwidth=\"1200\" name=\"\" title=\"D Field Crescent 3a.JPG\" height=\"438.36999999999995\" width=\"594.4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/D-Field-Crescent-3a.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" class=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\">Field Crescent<em> Phyciodes pratensis  <\/em>(Lep.: Nymphalidae)&nbsp; Aziza Cooper<\/div>\n<p>  <\/p>\n<p>  <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Jeremy Tatum writes that there are still <strong>Painted Ladies <\/strong>and  <strong>Red Admirals<\/strong> to be seen on the Mount Tolmie reservoir and around the Jeffery Pine, after about 5:30 in the evenings.&nbsp; He also saw a  <strong>Red Admiral <\/strong>on Livesay Road, Central Saanich, today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp; Jeff Gaskin writes:&nbsp; The VNHS trip to Duncan produced the following highlights:&nbsp; At Cowichan Station, no Margined Whites were seen but we did see a  <strong>comma<\/strong> species, 2 <strong>Cedar Hairstreaks<\/strong>, 3 <strong>Red Admirals<\/strong>, and 4  <strong>Western Tiger Swallowtails<\/strong>.&nbsp; At Mount Pr\u00e9vost the only butterfly at the top was an  <strong>Anise Swallowtail<\/strong>,&nbsp; and near the bottom were both <strong>Pale<\/strong> and  <strong>Western Tiger Swallowtails<\/strong>, and 4 <strong>Western Spring Azures<\/strong>.&nbsp; At the sewage lagoons was a  <strong>Lorquin&#8217;s Admiral<\/strong>.&nbsp; Altogether we had 8 species.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; As viewers can see, this is a pretty busy time for Invert Alert.
