{"id":4306,"date":"2017-05-31T20:59:15","date_gmt":"2017-06-01T03:59:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=4306"},"modified":"2017-06-01T19:05:08","modified_gmt":"2017-06-02T02:05:08","slug":"may-31-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=4306","title":{"rendered":"May 31"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2017 May 31<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Some of us have difficulty in telling a bug from a beetle, so we start today\u2019s entry with two bugs, and we thank Charlene Wood and Claudia Copley for identifications.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The first bug was photographed by Mik Yip in Nanoose Bay on May 23.\u00a0 Charlene remarks that the two white spots on the wing are characteristic of western specimens.\u00a0 They feed on a variety of plants as well as scavenging and predating other insects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 593px;\" title=\"Mike Yip bug.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Mike-Yip-bug.jpg\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Small Milkweed Bug <em>Lygaeus kalmii <\/em>(Hem.:\u00a0 Lygaeidae)\u00a0 Mike Yip<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 The second bug was photographed by Dar Churcher in Colwood.\u00a0 At first we were not sure whether it was <em>Brochymena <\/em>or <em>Halyomorpha<\/em>, but Claudia set us right by pointing out the rough shoulders and no white bands on the antenna, which makes it <strong><em>Brochymena<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There are several very similar species.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Penta.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Penta.jpg\" width=\"594.4\" height=\"514.6513333333332\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image004.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Rough stink bug <em>Brochymena <\/em>sp.
