{"id":3960,"date":"2017-04-24T22:40:41","date_gmt":"2017-04-24T22:40:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=3960"},"modified":"2020-11-23T07:52:11","modified_gmt":"2020-11-23T15:52:11","slug":"april-24-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=3960","title":{"rendered":"April 24"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #000000; background-color: #ffffff; font-family: Calibri,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;\">\n<p><strong>2017 April 24<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 We have been having some fun with <em> Egira perlubens\/rubrica<\/em>!\u00a0\u00a0 I had not realized how similar these moths can be until Bill Katz sent us the first of the two photographs below, of a moth at Mattick\u2019s farm, unsure as to whether it was <em>perlubens <\/em>or <em>rubrica<\/em>.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t sure, either, so I sent the photo to Libby Avis.\u00a0 As it happens, Libby had coincidentally just been spending some time on how to distinguish between these two species herself, and she remarked: \u201cIt is comforting to know I\u2019m not the only one with this problem\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Libby spent a while pondering over Bill\u2019s moth, and gave her best analysis and opinion, and I sent an email thanking her.\u00a0 Less than a minute after I had sent my thank you note, my computer sounded a little \u201cping\u201d to tell me of an incoming message.\u00a0 It was Steven Roias, \u00a0who was totally unaware of Bill\u2019s moth and of the correspondence between Libby and me, and he sent a photo (the second of the two below), also uncertain whether it was <em>perlubens <\/em>or<em> rubrica. <\/em>Again, I asked Libby!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The net result is that we now believe that both of the moths are <strong><em>Egira perlubens<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 361px; height: 357px;\" title=\"Egira rubrica or perlubens.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Egira-rubrica-or-perlubens.jpg\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Egira perlubens <\/em>(Lep.: Noctuidae)\u00a0 Bill Katz<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 500px; height: 557px;\" title=\"Egira rubrica Roias.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Egira-rubrica-Roias.jpg\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" alt=\"\" \/><em>Egira perlubens <\/em>(Lep.: Noctuidae)\u00a0 Steven Roias<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here for the record are some of Libby\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Bill\u2019s photo:<\/p>\n<p>The orbicular spot is a <em>large<\/em>, white, <em>horizontal<\/em> oval. In all the photos of <em>E. rubrica<\/em> that I\u2019ve seen, the orbicular spot is much narrower, sometimes more like a bar than an oval, and always slanted down at an angle \u2013 not horizontal. \u00a0Also <em>rubrica<\/em> has a dark basal dash, sometimes quite faint, but always there. The photo you sent is a bit blurry, but I don\u2019t see a basal dash.
