Val George writes:\u00a0 I did my official Butterfly Count Week count\u00a0yesterday, April16, for Mount Douglas and the surrounding area.\u00a0 Still not many butterflies around.\u00a0 My tally was: 1 <\/strong>California<\/strong> Tortoiseshell<\/strong> at the summit (photo attached);\u00a0 3 Cabbage Whites<\/strong> and 1 Western Spring Azure<\/strong> at the base.<\/p>\n

Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 This morning I saw a Cabbage White<\/strong> at Swan Lake, and another one at my Saanich apartment building.\u00a0 But, alas, the grey skies have returned this afternoon, and butterflies remain scarce. \u00a0Rosemary Jorna reports from Sooke that she has yet to see her first butterfly of the year. Here\u2019s a photograph of a caterpillar of the Common Emerald Moth<\/strong> from Quick\u2019s Bottom today.\u00a0 This very common moth is a European invader.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Jody Wells sends a photograph of a syrphid fly from Martindale Flats, April 14.\u00a0 Dr Jeff Skevington, syrphid expert, says that he would guess it is Syrphus<\/em><\/strong> from the general gestalt.\u00a0 It is often not possible to identify them from photographs.\u00a0 The only way to be sure is to check out the upper calypter.\u00a0 So, Jody, next time be sure to check out the upper calypter.\u00a0 (And, if you can\u2019t, send a photo anyway!)<\/p>\n
