\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>I spotted an entry on the bcvibirds birdy site saying that Ian Cruickshank had seen a Moss\u2019s Elfin<\/strong> at East Sooke on April 1.<\/p>\n

Ron Flower writes:\u00a0 Nora and I went out to Jordan River yesterday and on the way home we stopped at Muir Creek where we got our first butterfly of the year –\u00a0 a rather sad looking Red Admiral<\/strong>. We were sitting on a log at the river mouth about three-ish and it landed right in front of us.<\/p>\n

Annie Pang saw her first Cabbage White<\/strong> of the year.\u00a0 She writes:\u00a0 Cool to finally see a butterfly!\u00a0 [We can all relate to that this year.]\u00a0\u00a0 Annie also photographed two bees.\u00a0 Thanks to Cory Sheffield for identification.<\/p>\n

Some musings (by Jeremy Tatum) on the spelling of Sara Orangetip.\u00a0\u00a0 Orangetip, Orange-tip, Orange-Tip and Orange Tip are all seen.\u00a0 If any principle is to be called upon, I suppose that it would make sense to try to be consistent with other butterfly names.\u00a0 I think we always spell Swallowtail thus, not Swallow-tail or Swallow-Tail or Swallow Tail.\u00a0 Consistency of spelling, then, would seem to suggest Orangetip, Duskywing, etc.<\/p>\n

As for Sara versus Sara\u2019s, Edith versus Edith\u2019s or Editha.\u00a0 Well, Milbert\u2019s Tortoiseshell is named, I think, in honour of Mr Milbert.\u00a0 (Actually, I think, M. Jacques-G\u00e9rard Milbert, so we\u2019d better start to pronounce it Meelberre.)\u00a0 But no one seems to know who Sara or Edith were.\u00a0 \u00a0For the English name of Anthocharis sara<\/em>, we should just be guided by what we do for Speyeria hydaspe<\/em> amd Speyeria zerene<\/em>, and just repeat the specific name.\u00a0 Thus the Sara Orangetip, consistent with the Hydaspe Fritillary.\u00a0 It would be different if we knew who, if anyone, Sara was.\u00a0 Also, I don\u2019t know what \u201csara\u201d means, if anything, in Latin.\u00a0 Scientific names don\u2019t have to be Latin – although they are usually made to look like Latin, and to follow Latin grammar.\u00a0 If the butterfly were named after someone called Sara, the Latin for \u201cSara\u2019s\u201d would be Sarae, and the scientific name would have been given as sarae<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Of course if the argument that I have just given for Anthocharis sara <\/em> is extended to Euphydryas editha<\/em>, and there is no real Edith, we should have to refer to the Editha Checkerspot, though I doubt if this would take on.<\/p>\n
