[Jeremy Tatum interjects:\u00a0 Alas, I am getting nothing here at my Saanich apartment!] \u00a0New moths for my place in Saanichton this year were: <strong><em>Orthosia <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>pacifica<\/em><\/strong><strong> (3!), <\/strong><strong><em>Cerastis enigmatica<\/em><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong><em>Melanolophia imitata<\/em><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong>and <strong><em>Cladara limitaria<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0The latter are really impressive when they&#8217;re fresh and have mint green accents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Cladara limitaria (Saanichton, BC - April 1, 2017).jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Cladara-limitaria-Saanichton-BC-April-1-2017.jpg\" width=\"598.4\" height=\"398.93333333333334\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><em>Cladara limitaria <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae)\u00a0 Jeremy Gatten<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 Rosemary Jorna writes:\u00a0\u00a0 I found this perfect empty cocoon while working in our yard in the Kemp Lake area.\u00a0 It is about 1.4 cm\u00a0 long.\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum responds:\u00a0 This is the cocoon of one of our giant sawflies (Cimbicidae).\u00a0 We have two common large species, <em>Cimbex <\/em><em>americana<\/em> and <em>Trichiosoma triangulatum<\/em>.\u00a0 My guess is that the cocoons of the two species are distinguishable, but I don\u2019t know how.\u00a0 One would have to rear the larvae &#8211; which are fairly commonly encountered.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 406px; height: 542px;\" title=\"cimbicid pupa 2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/cimbicid-pupa-2.jpg\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image004.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Giant sawfly cocoon (Hym.: Cimbicidae)\u00a0 Rosemary Jorna<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rosemary also found the moth below on one of the maple trees near Kemp Lake. It is a pterophorid, and probably a native species, and certainly not the usual European <em>Emmelina monodactyla<\/em>. Because of their unusually narrow wings, they are not easy to identify &#8211; but maybe not impossible.
