{"id":3606,"date":"2017-01-31T06:44:58","date_gmt":"2017-01-31T14:44:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=3606"},"modified":"2017-02-01T08:45:11","modified_gmt":"2017-02-01T16:45:11","slug":"january-31","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=3606","title":{"rendered":"January 31"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2017 January 31<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Index<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We are pleased to say that we have now re-installed the Index of photographs that have appeared on Invertebrate Alert, dating back to the beginning of the site in 2010.\u00a0 Once you have logged on to the site, if you then click on the large white words INVERTEBRATE ALERT at the top of the page, if all goes well you will immediately get the Index.\u00a0 The names are given as scientific names only &#8211; so you\u2019ll need to know the scientific name of the animal that you are looking for.\u00a0 The Index is arranged alphabetically by Class, then alphabetically by Order within each Class, then alphabetically by Family within each Order, and so on. The Index gives the dates on which the species in question was posted, so you then have to go back to the site and scroll down to the date needed.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry that the Index doesn\u2019t give more information, such as English names, or name of photographer &#8211; but, as you can imagine, it was quite a bit of work as is, and I think you\u2019ll probably be able to find your way about reasonably quickly.\u00a0 While I compiled the Index myself, thanks to Adam Taylor for managing to get it up on the site in a form that you can easily view and which I can update periodically.\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, we have had several photographs of our large local June scarab beetle, including two recent photographs of its larva.\u00a0 I have labelled them as <em>Polyphylla decemlineata<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks to Claudia Copley for pointing out that our local species is in fact more likely to be <em>Polyphylla crinita<\/em>.\u00a0 If I can find a moment sometime, I\u2019ll see if I can relabel them<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Scott Gilmore sends a photograph of a <strong>snout mite<\/strong> from the family Bdellidae, found under stones in his backyard in Lantzville, January 29 &#8211; 30.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"mite.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/mite.jpg\" width=\"599.2\" height=\"466.87666666666667\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Snout mite. probably <em>Neomolgus littoralis<\/em> (Aca.: Bdellidae)\u00a0 Scott Gilmore<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>University of Alberta acarologist Heather Proctor writes: It is indeed a bdellid, looking wistfully skywards!
