(Orth.: Acrididae)\u00a0 Cheryl Hoyle<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Liam Singh sends a picture of a <strong>springtail, <\/strong><strong><em>Entomobrya intermedia <\/em><\/strong>from his Jade Place home.\u00a0 Not all insects have wings, but those that don\u2019t (example: fleas) have evolved from winged ancestors in the distant past, and they no longer have or need them in their present way of life.\u00a0 Springtails, on the other hand, are primitively wingless; they did not evolve from winged ancestors.\u00a0 For this and other reasons, they are no longer considered to be insects.\u00a0 You can call them entognaths or hexapods, but not insects.\u00a0 Most people will settle for springtails.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Liam collemb.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Liam-collemb.jpg\" width=\"512\" height=\"356.6933333333333\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image004.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Springtail <em>Entomobrya intermedia <\/em>(Collembola: Entomobryidae)\u00a0 Liam Singh<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0 Since yesterday we have managed to identify Liam\u2019s bark louse shown in yesterday\u2019s posting.\u00a0 It\u2019s about the same size as the springtail, but it has wings, so it is a genuine insect!
