{"id":3179,"date":"2016-09-13T13:37:33","date_gmt":"2016-09-13T21:37:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=3179"},"modified":"2016-09-19T14:52:56","modified_gmt":"2016-09-19T21:52:56","slug":"septermber-13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=3179","title":{"rendered":"September 13"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>2016 September 13<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Tonight:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>At Fraser\u00a0 159, UVic,\u00a0 7:30 pm.\u00a0 Catherine Scott will talk about her observations on <strong><em>Latrodectus hesperus<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Ara.: Theridiidae) at Island View Beach.\u00a0 This will be of great interest to all viewers of this site.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Rosemary Jorna sends an interesting photograph from Broom Hill.\u00a0 Thanks to Jeremy Gatten for identifying the snail for us.\u00a0\u00a0 The tiny invertebrate next to it is of interest.\u00a0 Thanks to Rob Cannings who identified it as a <strong>springtail <\/strong>of the Family (recognized by the globular shape) Sminthuridae.\u00a0 Whether springtails regularly feed on snail slime or whether the springtail randomly encountered the snail in passing will need to be resolved by further observations, although Rosemary writes that it kept going back to make contact with the snail. Rob writes: Springtails eat many things, from fungal hyphae and spores to bacteria and components of decomposing plant and animal material of all sorts. I bet they could get lots of nutritious things from snail slime.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"collemb2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/collemb2.jpg\" width=\"512\" height=\"379.66488413547233\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Northwest Hesperian Snail <em>Vespericola columbianus <\/em>(Pul.: Polygyridae)<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">and springtail (Collembola) \u00a0 Rosemary Jorna<\/div>\n<p>Jeremy Tatum comments.\u00a0 At one time, springtails were insects &#8211; but the taxonomists have been busy since then.\u00a0 We now have an Arthropod Subphylum called Hexapoda, which includes two Classes,\u00a0 Insecta and Entognatha.\u00a0 Springtails (Order Collembola) are now Entognatha, no longer Insecta.\u00a0 Another animal that many of us are familiar with (but we wish we weren\u2019t), which was an insect but is now an entognath, is the Firebrat (Order Thysanura, Family Lepismatidae) <em>\u00a0<\/em>that shares our homes with us.
