height: 450px;\" title=\"A diadematus.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/A-diadematus.jpg\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image002.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><em>Araneus diadematus <\/em>(Ara.: Araneidae)\u00a0 Annie Pang<\/div>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Aziza Copper photographed the micro moth shown below near the Garcia reservoir on August 26.\u00a0 Thanks to Libby Avis for identifying it as the <strong>Alfalfa Webworm Moth <\/strong><strong><em>Loxostege cereralis<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"K Moth Garcia Res 1a.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/K-Moth-Garcia-Res-1a.jpg\" width=\"599.2\" height=\"448.90066666666667\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image004.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>Alfalfa Webworm Moth <em>Loxostege cereralis <\/em>(Lep.: Crambidae)\u00a0 Aziza Cooper<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 The name <em>cereralis<\/em> immediately raises a spelling question.\u00a0 Surely this is a misspelling for <em>cerealis<\/em> \u00ad &#8211;\u00a0 a spelling that is sometimes seen in the literature.\u00a0\u00a0 The definitive way to determine the correct spelling is supposed to be to go back to the original scientific description, and see what spelling the author used.\u00a0 This is often easier said than done, and I didn\u2019t manage to do it for this moth.\u00a0 However, I found enough to convince myself that the <em>cereralis<\/em> spelling is the correct, or at least the preferred, spelling.\u00a0 It is not named after what you eat for breakfast.\u00a0 Rather, it is named for Ceres (genitive Cereris), the Goddess of Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Claudia Copley for identifying some recent photographs of grasshoppers and bush-crickets (katydids) that have been sent to Invertebrate Alert.\u00a0 The first was photographed\u00a0 recently by Paige Erickson-McGee.\u00a0 Claudia writes that it is <strong><em>Melanoplus <\/em><\/strong><strong>sp., <\/strong>and probably <strong><em>M. femurrubrum<\/em><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong>the very common Red-legged Grasshopper.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"grasshopper Paige.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/grasshopper-Paige.jpg\" width=\"599.2\" height=\"467.37600000000003\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" src=\"file:\/\/\/F:\/DOCUME%7E1\/tatum\/LOCALS%7E1\/Temp\/msohtml1\/01\/clip_image006.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><em>Melanoplus <\/em>(probably <em>femurrubrum<\/em>)\u00a0 (Orth.: Acrididae)\u00a0 Paige Erickson-McGee<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Next is <strong><em>Meconema thalassinum<\/em><\/strong>, a bush-cricket, photographed by Cheryl Hoyle in Saanich on August 27.\u00a0 Claudia remarks that this is non-native, and a very recent invader.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"tetti.Hoyle.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/tetti.Hoyle_.jpg\" width=\"599.2\" height=\"401.71086142322105\" name=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0Drumming Katydid <em>Meconema thalassinum <\/em>(Orth.: Tettigoniidae)\u00a0 Cheryl Hoyle<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Claudia has also identified Cheryl Hoyle\u2019s grasshopper posted on August 5.
