\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Mike Yip sends an interesting photograph of a moth from his Nanoose Bay garden.\u00a0 It is a Large Yellow Underwing<\/strong>, which has only in the past very few minutes emerged from its pupa, and its wings have not yet hardened and expanded to their full size.<\/p>\n

Devon Parker writes:\u00a0 My Dad and I were at Jordan River again today (May 31) looking for Johnson’s Hairstreak<\/strong>. We managed to find one in the spot you visited with us and another specimen 0.5 km away. We also found a butterfly we haven’t seen there before, Western Spring Azure<\/strong>. There was also a species of diurnal moth nectaring on the willows. \u00a0Total for the day was.<\/p>\n

2 Johnson’s Hairstreak<\/strong>
\n2 Western Spring Azures<\/strong>
\n1 Silvery Blue<\/strong>
\n6 diurnal moths (photo below)
\n4 Western Pine Elfins<\/strong>
\n1 Two-banded Grizzled Skipper<\/strong>
\n10 Comma sp.<\/strong> (Ear shaped white marking)<\/p>\n

\u00a0Drasteria divergens<\/em> (Lep.: Erebidae – Erebinae)\u00a0 Devon Parker<\/p>\n

Jeremy Tatum writes: Devon mentions the ear-shaped \u201ccomma\u201d on the underside of the comma sp. hindwing.\u00a0 I think<\/em> that this rules out oreas<\/em> and gracilis <\/em>(which have a V-shaped \u201ccomma\u201d).\u00a0 I think<\/em> the \u201cear-shaped\u201d mark indicates either satyrus <\/em>or faunus<\/em>.\u00a0 Amazingly I still haven\u2019t seen a Satyr Comma this year. but Gordon Hart writes that he saw one on May 31 in his Highlands yard – a bit faded, but noticeably different from the smaller and darker Green Commas.<\/p>\n
