Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 Is this a dagger which I see before me?\u00a0\u00a0 Actually Jeremy Tatum didn\u2019t write that at all – William Shakespeare did.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know the play Macbeth<\/em> very well, but I assume that there is a character in the play who is a moth enthusiast, and that he has just come across a member of the genus Acronicta<\/em>.\u00a0 The moths of this large genus\u00a0are called daggers\u00a0because\u00a0they show a dagger-like mark in the middle of the forewing.\u00a0\u00a0 This mark is prominent and obvious in some species.\u00a0 In others it requires a little bit of imagination.\u00a0 I think in Acronicta dactylina <\/em><\/strong>it needs rather more than a little bit.\u00a0 I can\u2019t honestly say that I see a dagger before me at all.<\/p>\n

And here is a Common Emerald Moth.<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is an introduced European species.\u00a0 It is known as the Common Emerald in Britain, but here, at least in Victoria, it is commoner than most of our native emeralds, so the name is still appropriate.<\/p>\n
