Annie Pang sends a photograph of the European Paper Wasp<\/strong> from Gorge Park, May 11.\u00a0\u00a0 For the interest of those who, like me, originally hailed from the UK and you are wondering if you remember this wasp from the \u201cold country\u201d – no, I am pretty sure you do not.\u00a0 It occurs in Europe, but not, I think, in the British Isles.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Aziza Cooper sends a photograph of a bunch of young spiderlings, which I thought might be a challenge to our spider expert, Robb Bennett.\u00a0 Not a bit of it!\u00a0\u00a0 Robb writes:\u00a0 Hatchling araneids (probably Araneus diadematus<\/em><\/strong>) getting ready to disperse.\u00a0 They would have overwintered as eggs.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum sends a photograph of a snout moth <\/strong>Hypena californica<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 That\u2019s \u201csnout\u201d with a small s, because all of the Hypena<\/em> genus are \u201csnouts\u201d.\u00a0 The caterpillar, which was found near Blenkinsop Lake on Stinging Nettle, was shown on April 29, when the exact species was not known.\u00a0 I have now labelled it californica<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Libby Avis sends some photographs.\u00a0 First is a pretty micro, Eucosma amphorana<\/em><\/strong>, <\/em>determined by Dave Holden.\u00a0 This one was at Piper\u2019s Lagoon, Nanaimo, April 1. Libby writes that there were a lot of them in small woody debris at the tideline.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 And last is, I think, the mystery butterfly that I (Jeremy Tatum) have been mentioning recently from Mount Tolmie.\u00a0 Now that I can have a good look at it from Marie\u2019s photograph, I believe it is not such a mystery after all, but it is in fact just a common or garden Painted Lady<\/strong>.\u00a0 If anyone thinks maybe not, let us know.<\/p>\n
