2024 September 25<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>The last three years have been quite poor years for Pine Whites<\/strong>, with only three having been reported to this site this year, the last one being on July 27.\u00a0 It was a delightful surprise to get two photographs from independent observers yesterday, starting with this spectacular photograph by Gordon Hart at Aylard Farm, East Sooke Park.<\/p>\n

Shortly after receiving this, we received more from Marie O\u2019Shaughnessy, as follows<\/p>\n

It was an interesting visit to East Sooke Regional Park this afternoon. With the misty fog shrouding the meadows at times it\u00a0seems like nothing was going to be seen. How wrong, I was. The fog moved off by 2pm.<\/p>\n

Two Pine White<\/strong> butterflies were busy\u00a0nectaring,\u00a0 My first for the year.
\nSeveral \u00a0Orb -weaver Spiders were capturing insects, including a dragonfly.\u00a0 Plenty of crickets and grasshoppers were jumping.<\/p>\n

Once the sun came out from the marine fog that blanketed Aylard Farm, this afternoon, many dragonflies were seen perched or flying around.\u00a0 There were many male and female Variegated<\/strong> Meadowhawks<\/strong> in one of\u00a0the upper meadows.\u00a0 I could find only one Paddle-tailed Darner<\/strong>.\u00a0 At least 10 Common Green Darners<\/strong> were flying in the meadow, but I never saw any ‘\u2019\u00a0hanging ”, that I could find, even though they would disappear and re-appear.<\/p>\n
