a white caterpillar with red spiracles hiding in a folded dead maple leaf on the ground along the Galloping Goose Trail in View Royal.\u00a0 Because it was half hidden in the dead leaf, it was impossible to get a perfect photograph without disturbing the caterpillar.\u00a0 Nevertheless, Ian got the photograph shown below.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img (max-width: 686px) 100vw, 686px\" \/><em>Sabulodes aegrotata <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae)\u00a0 Ian Cooper<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ian handed the caterpillar to me for rearing, and, before I could get any further photographs, the caterpillar had made a white silken cocoon.\u00a0 Just three days ago I had occasion to look inside the cocoon, and I discovered a pupa inside, white as the driven snow, something I had never seen before:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-23665 aligncenter\" Tatum<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today, September 24, the adult moth emerged, enabling the identification as <strong><em>Sabulodes aegrotata<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 After photography, I released it along the Lochside Trail near Blenkinsop Lake.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-23666 aligncenter\" 704px) 100vw, 704px\" \/><em>Sabulodes aegrotata <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae)\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This was an interesting find, because I had never before seen a moth pupa as white as this one.\u00a0 Also, the caterpillar apparently has the English name <strong>Omnivorous Looper<\/strong>, suggesting that it is quite a well-known caterpillar, yet none of the images of the caterpillars of <em>S. aegrotata<\/em> that I could find on the Internet look at all like this one.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Gaskin writes:\u00a0 This morning, September 24, at Swan Lake there were at least 2 <strong>Blue-eyed<\/strong> and 2 <strong>Paddle-tailed Darners<\/strong>.\u00a0 Also, there were a few other darners which I was unable to identify, and one<strong> Blue Dasher.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 There were still one or two <strong>Cabbage White <\/strong>butterflies flying around in Mount View and Swan Creek Parks this morning (September 24).\u00a0 When will the last butterfly be reported?\u00a0 Is an October butterfly sighting
