{"id":23313,"date":"2024-08-26T20:07:53","date_gmt":"2024-08-27T03:07:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=23313"},"modified":"2024-08-27T06:04:40","modified_gmt":"2024-08-27T13:04:40","slug":"2024-august-26-evening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=23313","title":{"rendered":"2024 August 26 evening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>2024 August 26 evening<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Mike and Barbara McGrenere found and photographed a rather worn <strong>Painted Lady <\/strong>along the west side of the Island View Nursery on August 25.\u00a0 This is close to where Marie O\u2019Shaughnessy photographed one on the same day (see yesterday\u2019s posting), but it is obviously a different individual.\u00a0 It is good to know that there are still a few around.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-23310 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG_0931-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"536\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG_0931-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG_0931-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG_0931-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/IMG_0931.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 536px) 100vw, 536px\" \/><\/strong>Painted Lady\u00a0 <em>Vanessa cardui\u00a0 <\/em>(Lep.: Nymphalidae) Mike McGrenere<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We haven\u2019t yet seen any American Ladies here this year, but a few days ago, three American Ladies turned up at Swansea in South Wales.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Marie O\u2019Shaughnessy photographed several dragon\/damselflies at McIntyre reservoir on August 24.\u00a0 She writes:<br \/>\nDragonflies seen were\u00a0\u2026<br \/>\n<strong>1 Black Saddlebags<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>11 Blue Dashers<br \/>\n3 Blue-eyed Darners<br \/>\n1 Cardinal Meadowhawk<br \/>\n4 Western Pondhawks<\/strong>, 3 blue male and 1 green female<strong><br \/>\n1 Paddle-tailed Darner<br \/>\n3 Tule Bluet\u00a0damselfly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr Rob Cannings, libellulids ofter rest in a horizontal position;\u00a0 pondhawks rest on the ground;\u00a0 aeshnids rest in a vertically hanging position.\u00a0 The first two of Marie\u2019s photographs below show a libellulid and a pondhawk doing just what they are supposed to do. \u00a0Indeed, most of the photographs of the Cardinal Meadowhawk and the Western Pondhawk that have appeared on this site over the years have shown them behaving properly. Could someone please photograph an aeshnid hanging vertically, to complete the picture?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"
