Aziza Cooper writes:\u00a0 On August 8, on Mount Washington I observed nine species of butterflies:<\/p>\n

Anise Swallowtail \u2013 3
\nAnna’s Blue \u2013 8
\nBoisduval’s Blue \u2013 1
\nArctic Blue- 1
\nMariposa Copper \u2013 5
\nPurplish Copper \u2013 5
\nHydaspe Fritillary – 10 to 15
\nGreat Arctic \u2013 1
\nCommon Branded Skipper – 2\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Anise Swallowtails<\/strong> and Great Arctic<\/strong> were at the summit. Arctic Blue<\/strong> was a little down from the top of the chair-lift. The others were seen both near the summit and at the lodge elevation.<\/p>\n

Here are some of Aziza\u2019s photographs.\u00a0 We showed two of her photographs of the Arctic Blue in the August 8 posting.<\/p>\n

We haven\u2019t yet had any reports of the Great Arctic this year from within the Southern Vancouver Island Birdwatching Area, even though this is an even-numbered year.<\/p>\n

\"\"Common Branded Skipper Hesperia comma\u00a0 <\/em>(Lep.: Hesperiidae) Aziza Cooper<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Hitherto in this site, we have included all records of Hesperia <\/em>under the name Branded Skipper Hesperia comma.\u00a0 <\/em>From 2024 onwards, we are following the taxonomy of the ATC<\/em>, which lists Hesperia comma\u00a0 <\/em>(which we may call Common Branded Skipper) and Hesperia colorado <\/em>(which we may call Western Branded Skipper) as separate species.\u00a0 The colony at Cordova (Saanichton) Spit is believed to be Hesperia colorado<\/em>.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t had any reports from this colony, i.e. of this species, yet this year. The ones Aziza saw and photographed on Mount Washington are probably H comma<\/em>.\u00a0 In the United Kingdom, H. comma <\/em>is called the Silver-spotted Skipper.\u00a0 That name in North America is used for yet another species, in a different genus.<\/p>\n
