2024 July 8 morning<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>It was a very hot day yesterday for the July Butterfly Walk \u2013 probably too hot even for many butterflies.\u00a0 Six participants braved the heat for the Walk.\u00a0 Here is what we saw:<\/p>\n

Mount Tolmie:
\nLorquin’s Admiral – 2
\n<\/strong>Western Tiger Swallowtail – 2
\n<\/strong>Pale Tiger Swallowtail – 1
\n<\/strong>Cabbage White – 2<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Swan Lake:
\nLorquin’s Admiral – 7
\n<\/strong>Western Tiger Swallowtail – 5
\n<\/strong>Cabbage White – 1
\n<\/strong>Essex Skipper – 15 or more<\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition, many dragonflies were seen at Swan Lake, including a Black Saddlebags<\/strong>.\u00a0 Following is a selection of photographs taken during the Walk.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Here is a tiny, tiny moth photographed by Ian Cooper on June 24 in Colquitz River Park.\u00a0 It is almost certainly one of the smallest moths, in the Family Nepticulidae, possibly genus Stigmella<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Kirsten Mills writes:\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0July 6th<\/sup>, Jeff Gaskin and I went looking for butterflies near Mount Cokely and Mount Arrowsmith.\u00a0 The butterflies we saw included the following\u00a0 :\u00a0 \u00a013 Clodius Parnassians, 1 Cedar Hairstreak, 1 Mourning Cloak, 1 Sulphur species <\/strong>possibly Western seen only by Kirsten,\u00a0 Western <\/strong>and Pale Tiger Swallowtails,\u00a0 9 Hydaspe Fritillaries, <\/strong>and several Essex Skippers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Cowichan Station,\u00a0 we saw an immature male and an adult male Common Whitetail<\/strong> and a Western Pondhawk<\/strong>.\u00a0 Butterflies included Western Tiger Swallowtail, Lorquin’s Admiral, Essex Skippers <\/strong>and Cabbage Whites.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"Hydaspe Fritillary \u00a0Argynnis hydaspe <\/em>(Lep.: Nymphalidae)\u00a0 Kirsten Mills<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0This species was formerly called Speyeria hydaspe.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em>However, the ATC<\/em> treats Speyeria<\/em> merely as a subgenus of Argynnis<\/em>, which is the genus used for the European large fritillaries.<\/p>\n
