Marie O\u2019Shaughnessy sends photographs of a Red Admiral <\/strong>from Mount Tolmie yesterday June 28 \u2013 the same one that Jeremy Tatum reported from there in yesterday\u2019s posting.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 I am happy that Marie refers in correspondence to the underside<\/u> of the wings shown in the photograph, not, as we sometimes see, the \u201cventral\u201d side.\u00a0 This not a ventral view of the butterfly \u2013 it is a lateral<\/u> view.\u00a0 The words \u201cdorsal\u201d (from above \u2013 dorsum meaning \u201cback\u201d), \u201cventral\u201d (from below, venter meaning belly) and \u201clateral\u201d (from the side \u2013 latus meaning side) should be used to describe the view of the body<\/u> of the insect.\u00a0 For the wings, the words \u201cupperside\u201dand \u201cunderside\u201d are appropriate.<\/p>\n

A butterfly or moth has two pairs of wings\u00a0 –\u00a0 forewings and hindwings.\u00a0 The hindwings are sometimes called the \u201cunderwings\u201d \u2013 but this can be, and often is, misunderstood to mean \u201cunderside\u201d, so it is best avoided.\u00a0 We see in the above photograph of the lateral view of the butterfly, the underside of a hindwing, and part of the underside of a forewing.<\/p>\n
