2024 May12 morning<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Aziza Cooper reports that on the afternoon of May 11, there was one Brown Elfin<\/strong>, two Painted Ladies<\/strong> and one Mourning Cloak<\/strong> at the Mount Tolmie reservoir, and elsewhere on Mount Tolmie she saw two Western Spring Azures.\u00a0 <\/strong>Photographs of two of these butterflies and a fly are shown below.\u00a0 We thank Steven Roias for the identification of the fly.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum saw a Painted Lady <\/strong>in Uplands Park on May 11.<\/p>\n

Gordon Hart saw his first Pale Tiger Swallowtail <\/strong>of the year on May 8.\u00a0 On May 11 he was finally able to identify the \u201csmall brown jobs\u201d in his Highlands garden as Cedar Hairstreaks.\u00a0 <\/strong>Also in his garden were continuing Green <\/strong>and Satyr Commas.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>On May 11 Anne-Marie Hart spotted a California Ringlet<\/strong> at Island View Beach.<\/p>\n

Jeremy Tatum writes:\u00a0 The ATC<\/em> treats Coenonympha california <\/em>as a distinct species from C. tullia<\/em>. \u00a0Although the ATC <\/em>does not deal with English names, it would make sense for us to refer to our Coenonympha <\/em>as the California Ringlet.\u00a0 The ATC<\/em> lists about 17 named subspecies for this complex group.<\/p>\n
