{"id":20543,"date":"2023-12-04T21:39:34","date_gmt":"2023-12-05T05:39:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=20543"},"modified":"2023-12-04T21:39:34","modified_gmt":"2023-12-05T05:39:34","slug":"2023-december-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=20543","title":{"rendered":"2023 December 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>2023 December 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aziza Cooper sends photographs of two insects from the front door of the Swan Lake Nature House, December 3.<\/p>\n<p>The first is a <strong>crane fly<\/strong>, Family Tipulidae.\u00a0 The best known crane fly is probably the introduced European <em>Tipula paludosa<\/em>.\u00a0 There are many quite small tipulids that can be difficult to distinguish from winter gnats (Trichoceridae).\u00a0 <em>T. paludosa <\/em>is not the only large one \u2013 several local ones are at least as large, or larger, and quite handsome.\u00a0\u00a0 Aziza\u2019s is one of the large ones, and, I think it may be said, a handsome one.\u00a0\u00a0 If anyone can identify it, please do let us know.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-20541 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/A-Insect-Swan-Lk-1-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"532\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/A-Insect-Swan-Lk-1-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/A-Insect-Swan-Lk-1-1024x748.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/A-Insect-Swan-Lk-1-768x561.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/A-Insect-Swan-Lk-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 532px) 100vw, 532px\" \/>Crane Fly\u00a0 (Dip.: Tipulidae)\u00a0 Aziza Cooper<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The second is a fresh and rather well-marked European <strong>Winter Moth <em>Operophtera brumata.<\/em>\u00a0 <\/strong>This species varies a lot as to how well-marked it is.\u00a0 Many are fairly bland, such as the ones shown on November 23 and November 10.\u00a0 Can we say that Aziza\u2019s one, like her crane fly, is a handsome one?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-20542 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/A-Insect-Swan-Lk-2-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"508\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/A-Insect-Swan-Lk-2-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/A-Insect-Swan-Lk-2-768x553.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/A-Insect-Swan-Lk-2.jpg 827w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/>Winter Moth <em>Operophtera brumata <\/em>(Lep.: Geometridae)\u00a0 Aziza Cooper<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2023 December 4 Aziza Cooper sends photographs of two insects from the front door of the Swan Lake Nature House, December 3.
