October 25"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>2023 October 25<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>We have heard of a few more late October sightings of <strong>Cabbage White:\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Marie O\u2019Shaughnessy saw three along Beach Drive on October 17, and one along Dorset Road, Oak Bay, October 21.\u00a0 Kirsten Mills and Jeff Gaskin saw three in the Cowichan Valley, October 20.<\/p>\n<p>Also in the Cowichan Valley, Kirsten photographed this <strong>Autumn Meadowhawk.\u00a0 <\/strong>This is a fully mature specimen, with reddish legs.\u00a0 The species was formerly called the Yellow-legged Meadowhawk, but the yellow legs applies only to immature specimens, which is presumably one reason why the name was changed.<\/p>\n<p>Kirsten also photographed a <strong>Banded Woolly Bear.\u00a0 <\/strong>These are very common just now.\u00a0 They spend the winter as a caterpillar, not pupating until Spring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: picture of a moth settled on a glass window.\u00a0\u00a0 Because it is illuminated from behind in the upperside view, it is difficult to make out the wing pattern, but I think we can safely agree with Jochen\u2019s identification as a <strong>Autumnal Moth<\/strong>.\u00a0 It won\u2019t be long before we start to see the first Winter Moths.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img
