{"id":20174,"date":"2023-09-12T08:18:19","date_gmt":"2023-09-12T15:18:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=20174"},"modified":"2023-09-12T19:12:52","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T02:12:52","slug":"2023-september-12-morning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=20174","title":{"rendered":"2023 September 12 morning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>2023 September 12 morning<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There was no Invert Alert for September 11.<\/p>\n<p>This almost featureless small green caterpillar, found at Blenkinsop Lake yesterday, at first sight would appear to be almost impossible to identify.\u00a0 But then we notice that it has only three pairs of midabdominal prolegs, and we immediately think of a snout moth, <em>Hypena <\/em>sp.\u00a0 Then we notice that it does in fact have four pairs &#8211; although the first pair is much reduced.\u00a0 Also, the foodplant is not nettle &#8211; it is\u00a0Dogwood <em>Cornus stolonifera.\u00a0 <\/em>Yet everything about it still looks like <em>Hypena<\/em>.\u00a0 These clues quickly lead us to <em><strong>Hypena<\/strong> <strong>bijugalis<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The male and female adults moths are very different.\u00a0 The female in particular is quite a striking creature.\u00a0 I am not sure, but I think the caterpillar shown below is a female.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-20173 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_4751-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"369\" height=\"499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_4751-222x300.jpg 222w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_4751-758x1024.jpg 758w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_4751-768x1038.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/IMG_4751.jpg 888w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 369px) 100vw, 369px\" \/><em>Hypena bijugalis\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>(Lep.: Erebidae -Hypeninae) \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jeremy Tatum<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2023 September 12 morning There was no Invert Alert for September 11.
