{"id":19766,"date":"2023-08-15T19:55:25","date_gmt":"2023-08-16T02:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=19766"},"modified":"2023-08-17T14:51:39","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T21:51:39","slug":"2023-august-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=19766","title":{"rendered":"2023 August 15"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>2023 August 15<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Jeff Gaskin writes:<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, August 14, I went up to Christmas Hill.\u00a0 For about 45 minutes after reaching the top I saw nothing.\u00a0 Then the butterflies started to appear just before 6 p.m.\u00a0 First, I saw a <strong>Painted Lady<\/strong> and then two more <strong>Painted Ladies<\/strong> showed up, \u00a0and then finally at 6:15 p.m. the butterfly I was waiting for showed up, a <strong>Red Admiral<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, August 15, I saw just three species of butterflies at Swan Lake.\u00a0 They included a <strong>Lorquin&#8217;s Admiral<\/strong>,\u00a0 still in pretty good condition near the floating board walk, 31 <strong>Woodland Skippers<\/strong>, 30 of them were on asters which were newly planted on Nelthorpe Street. and three <strong>Cabbage Whites<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The dragonflies I saw at Swan Lake included at least three <strong>Black Saddlebags<\/strong>. The others included a dozen or more <strong>Blue Dashers<\/strong>,\u00a0 a Western Pondhawk,\u00a0 four <strong>Eight-spotted Skimmers<\/strong>, a few <strong>Paddle-tailed<\/strong> <strong>Darners<\/strong>, and some <strong>Blue-eyed Darners<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gordon Hart writes:<\/p>\n<p>We had at least two <strong>Pine Whites<\/strong> yesterday here at home in the Highlands, Monday August 14, nectaring on a white Hydrangea. There was also a <strong>Lorquin\u2019s Admiral<\/strong> and a few <strong>Woodland Skippers<\/strong>. The previous day, Sunday, August 13, we visited the Horticultural Centre of the Pacific (HCP) Gardens, and saw a <strong>Black Saddlebags<\/strong> and some <strong>Tule Bluets<\/strong> in the pond by the Japanese Garden.
