{"id":19744,"date":"2023-08-12T22:15:40","date_gmt":"2023-08-13T05:15:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=19744"},"modified":"2023-08-12T22:15:40","modified_gmt":"2023-08-13T05:15:40","slug":"2023-august-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/?p=19744","title":{"rendered":"2023 August 12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>2023 August 12<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Marie O\u2019Shaughnessy writes that there were two <strong>Painted Ladies<\/strong> and a <strong>Red Admira<\/strong>l on the top of Mount Tolmie at 5:30 on August 10 \u2013 and Jeremy Tatum found the same three at the same time on August 11.\u00a0 And on August 12, at 5:00 pm, Aziza Cooper saw two <strong>Painted Ladies <\/strong>still there.<\/p>\n<p>Ron Flower writes:\u00a0 At Island View Beach back field we saw 2<strong> Ringlets<\/strong> and 1 <strong>Lorquin\u2019s\u00a0 Admiral<\/strong>. Then at McIntyre Reservoir we saw 2 maybe 3 <strong>Purplish Coppers<\/strong> on the east side of reservoir. I think it&#8217;s an <strong><em>Aeshna umbrosa<\/em><\/strong> (a blue <strong><em>occidentalis<\/em><\/strong> form) mainly because the tenth segment is all dark (no spots). The blue abdominal spots are large for the average <em>umbrosa<\/em>, though, so I had to think a lot about it. Anyway, in my experience, these spots can be almost as big in the &#8220;<em>occidentalis<\/em>&#8221; form, as they are in other species &#8212; in general, these spots in <em>umbrosa<\/em> are smaller than in others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-19743 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Marie-aeshnid-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"449\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Marie-aeshnid-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vicnhs.bc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Marie-aeshnid.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/>Shadow Darner <em>Aeshna umbrosa <\/em>(Odo.: Aeshnidae)<br \/>\nMarie O\u2019Shaughnessy<\/p>\n<p>Marie promptly obliged and provided the additional photographs below, which enabled Dr Cannings to write:\u00a0 Yes, these photos confirm that this is a female <strong><em>Aeshna umbrosa<\/em><\/strong>. The pale blue-green face with a light brown line across it and the lateral thoracic stripe &#8212; narrow, straight and outlined in dark colour.
